Aftercare

Aftercare

The most important part of getting your tattoo is the aftercare!

Please follow these instructions correctly.

  • Once your tattoo session is complete your artist will wrap it securely with glad wrap, please leave this on until you are able to shower.
  • With clean hands remove glad wrap and wash tattoo using hot water and gentle anti bacterial soap. Pat dry with a clean towel and allow to completely air dry.
  • Using clean hands apply a thin layer of aftercare cream to the entire tattoo. Its important not to ‘drown’ the area in cream; it needs to breath. We recommend Bepanthen Tattoo & After Art Superior Tattoo Care, both of which can be purchased at Dark Days Tattoo Art Space. We also recommend a new tube each time to avoid cross contamination.
  • Keep the tattoo clean. Repeat the above steps 3x daily for the first 3 days. After 3 days continue to wash tattoo at least once per day, applying aftercare cream sparingly as needed.
  • Beware of brushing tattoo up against animals or dirty surfaces. Wash hands before applying aftercare cream. Avoid touching tattoo too much.
  • As your tattoo heals it will begin to ‘peel’, this is normal. Please don’t pick or scratch at it, or use exfoliant.
  • Do not soak tattoo – do not swim or bath in the ocean, rivers, pools or spa’s while tattoo is healing.
  • Keep out of the sun – do not use sunscreen on a healing tattoo. Once healed sunscreen should be used to help prevent fading.

Remember,

  • For the first 3 days you tattoo is an open wound. Its important to treat it as such.
  • The area will be sore, and may be swollen and feel hot. This is normal, avoid touching it and follow the above instructions. Your body will start to heal.
  • As it begins to heal and seal itself some light scabbing will form and then flake away over a 1-2 week period. This is often accompanied with some itchiness.
  • Never re-wrap your tattoo in cling film. If you must have it covered, loose cotton clothing is best.
  • Your tattoo will continue to heal and settle for another few weeks. During this time the tattoo may still be sensitive as skin layers heal and form.
